Security Perimeter Fencing

Security Perimeter Fencing

I am pleased to announce the school has gained limited funding for the installation of a security fence around the perimeter of the school buildings.

The fence will improve staff and student safety. It will discourage the antisocial behaviour that has resulted in high levels of vandalism.

The plans are available for viewing in the school office until 01/11/2018 for comment.

The WA Planning Commission requires comments and complaints to be made in writing to the school Principal including your contact details to allow for follow up on any issues that may arise.

Yours sincerely

Announcement: Change of Principal

Announcement: Change of Principal

Dear Parents / Guardians

I would like to thank all families for their ongoing support this year by working in partnership with the Spearwood PS team of staff in our continued focus on improvement and high expectations.  I am extremely proud of what we have achieved together over the last three terms, laying a strong foundation for success reflected in our school vision, ‘a key to the future’.

Over the holidays, I was the successful applicant of a Principal position close to home.  Whilst I am sad that I will not be able to finish the year with the students, families and staff; I wish each of you the very best for the future. It gives me great pleasure to inform you that Mrs Trish Ratto, a very experienced administrator, will be Principal for Term 4 and is committed to continuing the amazing work we have been focused on this year.

Mrs Rebecca Instance
Spearwood PS Principal

Terms  1 – 3, 2018

Dear Parents and Carers

Thank you for the very warm welcome to Spearwood PS. I have already met with the students at today’s early morning assembly and also in their classrooms and I look forward to meeting with the rest of the school community over the next few weeks.

Mrs Instance has provided a very comprehensive handover and I have had the opportunity to meet with the administration team and many staff members over the holidays to ensure a seamless transition. Much has been achieved this year at SPS and there are many celebrations to date.

The School Development Day on Friday 21 September was an opportunity for staff to engage in further professional learning in the Highway Heroes social emotional learning program and also in preparing for the National Quality Standards audit – including evaluating the play-based options available. Staff also had the opportunity to briefly analyse the 2018 NAPLAN results which will assist in setting priorities for 2019.

Term 4 promises to be a very busy term with a multitude of school events including:

  • Interschool Athletics Carnival on 16 and 18 October
  • Swimming lessons (K – Year 4) in Weeks 5 and 6
  • Lapathon on 31 October (P – Year 6)

Term 4 is also the term to assess the teaching and learning for 2018, and so there are several assessments planned over the course of the term. These assessments help teachers in writing their student reports for Semester 2 and therefore it is important for students to take the opportunity to fully demonstrate their learning and capabilities.

I am looking forward to my time at Spearwood PS and becoming involved in all that you do at your wonderful school.

Edu-Dance Concert

Edu-Dance Concert

WOW, what a wonderful culmination to our term of Edu-Dance. After 9 weeks of lessons, the students showed off their dances in a fabulous concert. The enthusiastic audience of parents, grandparents and friends were treated to some very happy and energetic performances.

Thanks to our awesome teacher Miss Osborne. Thanks also to all the teachers for assisting with the organizing of costumes.

Dance is the hidden language of the soul and of the body.

Kindy Pre Primary “Fairy Garden”

Kindy Pre Primary “Fairy Garden”

Thank you to our amazing Grounds Committee Volunteers, Annette and Donna, who have today planted and decorated the “Fairy Garden” in the Kindergarten Pre Primary area.

We are sure all of the fairies in Spearwood will love to inhabit the Strawberry House, relax in the chairs, cross the bridge and sleep under the mushrooms.

The students will continue to beautify this area with some painted bird boxes and mail boxes, which will allow the classes to post letters to the fairies.  We hope they love hearing our news!

Interesting things are happening at the library!

Interesting things are happening at the library!

Over the last few weeks the Spearwood PS Library has been having a bit of a face lift! We now have a small Reading Nook in the back of the library with soft cushions and chairs which is simply a place to sit and read! We also have an ongoing deletion program in place to remove old, damaged or out-of-date books from the shelves to make way for new books. Ms Irving is a huge fan of her new Big Red Reading Chair, while Mrs Day-Davies is hard at work building a collection of Graphic Novels for the school to enjoy. Plus, every Wednesday lunch time our amazing volunteer Abraham gets out some games and Uno cards to play with anyone who wants to come in.

If any parents wish to come have a look or chat to Mrs Day-Davies about their child’s reading, she is in the library before school on Tuesday and Wednesday.

The new library Reading Nook!
The library is looking very bright and cheerful at the moment.
Book Week 2018

Book Week 2018

During Week 6, Spearwood Primary School celebrated Book Week in style!

Through the week all the classes did different book-related activities. From writing book reviews to treasure hunts, racing around the school to eventually discover that the real treasure they were looking for was the library!

On Tuesday and Wednesday a second-hand book sale was held, selling old library books. Some of them were in really good condition and at 50c each, a lot of students walked away with armfuls of bargain buys! The money raised will go towards new library books for the school.

The best part of the week was the Book Character Parade. Almost all our students dressed up and a lot of parents cheered from the side lines. Mrs Day-Davies and Mr Ryder had a good look at all the costumes and chose their favourites from each class based on the effort they put into their costume and the creativity they showed when choosing their character. The winners were:

Room 16: Aeden (a Goosebumps book) / Jellaine (Stephen King’s IT)

Room 14: Samantha (Are You My Bottom?) / Lily (The Secret Unicorn)

Room 8: Fiona (Doctor Who’s Tardia) / Cassie (Operation Ouch)

Room 6: Kelly? (Willy Wonka) / (Dinosaur Roar!)

EC2: Lola (Luigi) / Grantley (Ninja Turtles)

Kindy: Jaxson and Ryder (Mr Happy and Mr Strong)

There were some pretty amazing costumes from the teachers as well. There were lots of Wally’s, a Magic Schoolbus, Professor Poopypants and even Emily Eyefinger made an appearance!

Thank you everyone for going to so much effort this week. From all the staff at Spearwood Primary, have a happy Book Week and keep on reading!
