Hiroshima Day

Hiroshima Day

Hiroshima Day is on the 6th August.  This is the anniversary of when the first Atomic Bomb was dropped.  It is remembered worldwide as people work towards lasting peace and never using nuclear weapons again.  Every year the City of Cockburn, who has a close sister city relationship with Japan, holds a ceremony in remembrance.  Our two School Captains, Sian and Kaliyah, planted a tree and then attended a special morning tea at the City of Cockburn.  At the morning tea there was a delightful Japanese cultural dance and origami.

The City of Cockburn has commemorated this day for 39 years, each year planting trees. Trees were first planted at the Peace Park on Spearwood Avenue and now trees are planted at other City Parks.  This year we planted at Powell Reserve and were assisted by Pierre and Joti from the City of Cockburn.

Let’s hope the annual ceremony and planting the trees are effective in helping us remember that such horrors should not be repeated.
