Congratulations to all of our students who participated enthusiastcally in the edudance concert on Monday. Each class presented their item under the guidance of their edudance teacher Dayna. Thanks to all of our families who supported their children on this day in the audience and with costumes.
We celebrated Water Week with a Charity Fundraiser Free Dress Day. Students and staff enthusiastically participated by wearing blue and donating to a Water Charity. We raised $125 which was donated to ‘WaterAid’.
Rom 8 made music with water by filling bottles to create a class orchestra.
Science week 2019 saw us launch our new ‘Maker Space’ with classes rotating through the space to participate in STEM activities.
For Science week the Kindy and Pre-primary students
conducted an experiment. We put coloured water into a glass and added a piece
of celery in each glass. After a couple
of hours, the celery started to turn blue and red. This occurred because the
plant draws water up through its capillaries. We loved this experiment and
wanted to change the colour of other things.
Room 6 spent half a day in our new Maker Space room and read a story called, “The cow tripped over the moon”.
We had to design something to get the cow over the moon.
We decided to build rockets. First we drew our designs. We
made rockets by creating 3D shapes such as cylinders and cones and added bits
and pieces to create the most amazing rockets.
We had a fun time in the maker space room creating designs
and building rockets.
You can see our fabulous creations displayed in our junior
block.
Room 8
The students in room 8 visited the Maker Space room on Wednesday of Science Week.
We read a story called ”The cat on the roof” and then we had to
design and make a way to help the cat get down off the roof. Some people made
ladders, trampolines, zip lines, parachutes and we even had a helicopter. We
had a wonderful time creating and solving the cat’s problem!
Room 14
Last week was a huge week for Room 14 – Year 5 & 6. We celebrated Science Week on Monday by catapulting a cow over the moon!! We all worked together to create a catapult that would send a pom pom as far as we could. The Maker Space room was filled with all sorts of great equipment to use. We used popsticks, elastic bands, tin cans, spoons and a hot glue guns to produce marvelous creations. After we had all finished, we had a competition to see whose catapult worked the best. Aiden, Kobi and Carter managed to send their ‘cow’ 4.25 metres!
For science week, room 16 used the new STEM room to create a
marble run out of materials of their choice. They watched a youtube clip to get
an idea of what a marble run is about. Then they worked in small groups to
design a marble run and to list the resources needed to build it.
On Wednesday the 21st of August, Spearwood Primary celebrated Children’s Book Week with an amazing Book Character parade. All the students and staff had great fun in their costumes and special effort was made to ensure each child had a book to go with their costume. Mrs Williams also worked with the students from Room 14 to tell the story of The Very Hungry Caterpillar with lots of giant food. This was a big surprise to myself as I was also dressed as a Very Hungry Caterpillar (which recently celebrated 50 years of publication). A special mention goes to the staff who all dressed up as a different Pig the Pug book. Mrs Derbyshire in the office also had an amazing blow-up dinosaur costume that some kids thought looked a bit scary!
Myself and Mrs Dowding had the difficult task of choosing the best costumes and were thrilled to be awarding so many book prizes to students.
Thank you to all the parents and students who put so much time and thought into the planning and construction of their costumes. We had some pretty original ones this year which will be hard to beat!
Mrs Day-Davies
Awards were given to the following students for their awards:
On Tuesday August 6th, Ms Rotondella and the School Captains, Tania and Lavinia attended the City of Cockburn Annual Hiroshima Day Peace Ceremony and Tree Planting. The Ceremony included a Welcome to Country, Tree Panting, Releasing of Doves and the construction of paper cranes, followed by morning tea.
Last week the Years Three to Five went planting trees and then to play in the Bibra Lake playground. Thank you to Linda Metz from the City of Cockburn Rehabilitation Team who organised the planting and took us on a bush walk to discover more about the bush land in our area.
Students had a
great time and were very well behaved.
We would like to thank the P & C for paying for the buses so these
could be free excursions to the students.
Thank you to all
adult staff, parents and volunteers who assisted with supervision and planting
for making this a great educational experience for all.
Last Friday the Year 6 students from room 14 attended an excursion to Chevron Park near Optus Stadium. The intention of the excursion was to allow the students to learn about the six Nyoongar seasons and see the plants that grow and immerse themselves in the environment.
As part of their Legacy Project, the year 6’s will be assisting in creating displays and allocating a Nyoongar season to each of our teaching and learning blocks.
The students were able to read information about each season and then interact with the playground equipment, logs and plants. It was great to see how inventive all the students were when building with logs and stones.
Some of the challenges were to count the djidi, djidi’s, find the tortoises and locate all of the emu eggs. A big thank you goes to Ms Derbyshire and Mrs Griffiths for organising the event and to our wonderful P & C for paying for the bus. We would also like to thank Ms Julie, Mrs Annette Patterson and Mrs Griffiths for attending on the day. It was a fabulous excursion and we all had a great time.
Spearwood Primary School have been lucky enough to secure grants from the Federal Government and City of Cockburn to fund a NAIDOC activity at School. On Tuesday Gracie Comeagain, her niece Jen and Nephew Brett, along with Bec from Urban Indigenous visited our school to share their culture and help us create a mural along the verandah. The mural reflects the landscape from the ocean to the inland. Students from K-6 all contributed to the painting and are very proud of their work. Come and check out our work.
