Book Character Parade 2021

Book Character Parade 2021

On Friday, 27th of August, the students at Spearwood Primary concluded Book Week with our annual Book Character Parade. We were very pleased to see 100% costume attendance for the second year running.

This year the staff dressed as a variety of different witches from an assortment of different books. Ms Rotondella, when questioned about her lack of costume by the P&C, reminded us all “They [witches] live in plain sight, disguised as normal women” (from The Witches by Roald Dahl). Very sneaky!

Thank you to all parents and caregivers who helped in the construction and assembly of all those costumes. Everyone looked fantastic.

Book Fair

Book Fair

Book Fair 2021

Despite a slow start, this year’s Book Fair finished off with a big bang. More than half the books sold this year were on the final day of the Fair.

In total, $1419.00 were spent at this year’s Book Fair. With every book sale, Spearwood Primary receives a small amount of Rewards Points which the school spends at Scholastic. This year’s sales generated a whopping $425.00 worth of books for our school library. Most of this was spent on new picture books, of which a very good selection were provided this year.

Thank you to all parents who supported us, as well as the students who chose to spend their hard earned pocket money at the Fair. I hope you enjoy your new books!

National Simultaneous Storytime 2021

National Simultaneous Storytime 2021

Today we participated in National Simultaneous Storytime an event held annually by Australian Library and Information Association (ALIA). More than a million children have participated in NSS over the years and at Spearwood Primary the whole school gets involved.

This year we heard “Give me some space!” by Philip Bunting read by NASA Astronaut Shannon Walker from the International Space Station! Philip Bunting is a well known Australian picture book author with a number of recent nominations for awards from the Children’s Book Council Australia (CBCA), including Mopoke, Wombat and Not Cute.

In order for this to become possible, this year ALIA partnered with the US-based non-profit organisation, Storytime from Space. This existing organisation aims to educate and excite children about science through reading various space-themed picture books, all from the International Space Station. Their website is filled with recordings of other book readings, activities and small experiments that kids can do at home. If you would like to share with your children some more amazing stories read by astronauts, please visit the above link and check it out.
