The whole school participated in The National Simultaneous Storytime which was held on Wednesday 21 May. Below is how our kindergarten class participated:
“Our Kindergarten class watched the live stream of the reading of the book “The Truck Cat” while Ms Korczynskyj followed along with the hard copy version. This enabled the children to make connections between television and literacy. We enjoyed pretending to pat cats as they went up, down, under and over along with the story. We then shared stories of our experiences of cats before embarking on a craft activity. Each child made a cardboard truck, with wheels that worked thanks to a simple but clever axle design and improved our fine motor skills as we wound wool around cardboard cats to decorate them.
All the cats enjoyed their rides zooming all around the classroom.”
Ms Korczynskyj, Kindy Teacher
On Friday, 11th April, Spearwood Primary School held the annual ANZAC Service. It was a respectful tribute to our fallen soldiers. Our students honoured the tremendous sacrifices made by Australian servicemen and women who have participated in wars, conflicts, and peacekeeping operations around the world, past and present. It was a time to reflect on the impact of war and how it has shaped and defined our shared sense of identity.
Thank you, Ms Dowding and the Year 6 student leaders, for hosting the ceremony and to all students and classroom teachers for learning and singing “The Green Hills of Albany” so beautifully.
Our Easter Hat Parade was held on Thursday 10 April. It was wonderful to see our students design and create their Easter Hats and have the support of so many parents in the student creations. So much work went into the designs. Thank you to all of our judges as I know it wasn’t an easy task to choose the winners. Thank you to the families who attended for making it a lovely community event.
Congratulations to our winners!

On Wednesday 9 April, the Year 5 & 6 students in Room 14 with the support of Ms Colleran, Miss Solous and Ms Dowding, participated in the RSL City of Cockburn and Cockburn City Council ANZAC Youth Parade and Service. The parade included the 10th Light Horse Memorial troops, The Scotch College Pipe Band, the City of Cockburn Pipe Band as well as representatives from the Cockburn RSL. The huge contingency made its way from the Council Offices down Coleville Avenue and Rockingham Road to the RSL Memorial Park and Field of Poppies on Spearwood Avenue. Some of our students came out to watch the parade as it passed by our school.
The Youth Parade is the only enduring ANZAC youth parade in Australia and has been running annually since 2001. It was designed and introduced by RSL of Australia Life Member, Mr Arthur Stanton OAM. Mr Stanton also attends and addresses our own Spearwood Primary School annual ANZAC Service.
On Tuesday 8 April we had our annual Edu-Dance Concert. It is always an annual highlight and a delightful culmination of a term’s worth of Physical Education Dance lessons.
Thankyou to Jo who teaches these amazing dances and comes up with the cool costume ideas. Thankyou to the parents who supplied what their children needed and some very impressive hair dos! Thank you to our EA’s Mrs Williams, Mrs McWilliam and Mrs Visioli who worked on costumes and other supports to make the show a success. Thankyou to the students who worked hard learning the dances and then astonishing us with their performances.
Thankyou to all who helped set up and clear up. Thank you to the P&C Committee for the raffle.
Finally thankyou to Ms Gartner who worked with most of the classes and pulls the whole concert together. She works many extra hours, shops, washes clothing for costumes, makes things and generally lets her creative side shine.
Last Friday, 21st March, was Harmony Day. What a lovely day we had with so many families coming along to have a picnic lunch with their children. There were many delicious lunches that families were eating and had brought to share on their very fancy picnic rugs. This year, there was fantastic students dressing in orange or their cultural or heritage country clothing again. Many children enjoyed playing out the front of the school for a change. Others went to the oval and courts to play, and some parents filled the teams.
The students in years 1-6 have been participating in Softball Clinics with coaches from Softball WA, for the past 4 weeks. They have been working on their skills of throwing and catching whilst wearing a glove, and hitting a ball from a Tee with the new component of wearing a safety helmet.
The coaches were very impressed with all the student’s behaviour and skill levels. Everyone had a great time during the sessions.
At the beginning of 2024, Our Cultural committee was looking for ideas for our school and Ms Julie and I thought it would be a great idea for the whole school to get involved with the creation of a huge Rainbow Serpent on the boring wall near the office door.
We used the colours of the Seasons that are around the school as our inspiration and our amazing Serpent started to take shape. Every student from Kindy to Year 6 had the opportunity to work on the artwork. While we painted, we explored the cultural significance of the Serpent and the different painting techniques of our First Nation People.
It took a while to get the Serpent installed on the wall, and then we added three circles to fill in the gaps. The three circles are designed around the hand of Ms Rotondella, Miss Sudholz and Mrs Dowding, using the same colour set as the Serpent and includes a different range of lines and patterns inspired by our cultural history.
The huge art installation not only enhanced the boring brick wall but gave us the opportunity to create lasting memories around our school, that reflect on our national history.
Glorious weather allowed for a special morning for the children in Kindergarten, Pre-primary and Year 1and 2 on Tuesday 5 November when the Swan Valley Cuddly Animal Farm came to visit.
Squeals of delight were heard from the children as they got up close and personal to a variety of farm animals including, ducks, goats, sheep, chickens and guinea pigs. The children loved holding, patting and feeding the creatures – many of which the younger children had never seen before.
Thank you Mrs Dowding and Mrs Griffiths for organising this treat for us all.
