Lightning Carnival

Well done to our Soccer and Netball teams who participated in the Lightning Carnival at Beale Park and Success Regional Sporting Complex last week. The round robin competition meant that all children had an opportunity to play against different competitors from other local schools.

Thank you to our volunteers who assisted on the day with team management and scoring.

Mr Chris Roberg who trained the team over the weeks leading up to the event and supported the team on the day.

Ms Donna Juner who supported one of the Netball Teams throughout the day.

SERCUL Planting

SERCUL Planting

Last week our Year 2/3 and Year 5/6 classes participated in planting some bush tucker species of plants in our school grounds.  SERCUL provided these plants to our school as part of the Phosphorus Awareness Project grant it receives from the Department of Biodiversity, Conservation and Attractions (DBCA), which aims to educate the community about the environmental impacts of too many nutrients entering our waterways.  We look forward to seeing their progress as they grow over the winter period.

World Environment Festival – Bibra Lake

World Environment Festival – Bibra Lake

On Wednesday the 12th June, Year 4s and 5s participated in the World Environment Day at Bibra Lakes Cockburn Wetlands precinct. We had the opportunity to do five different activities throughout the day with well-informed guides and volunteers.

Our first activity was looking at the tiny invertebrates that enhance the natural life cycles of both the rivers and the lakes. We had to find them and look at them through the microscope to identify them.

Next we looked at our Australian wildlife, especially the slightly smaller ones found around us. We had a go at setting up research traps, pretended to catch wild life and weigh and measure them.

We then walked to the lake and looked at water clarity and we did experiments to explore the effect of vegetation on the water quality. After that we investigated carbon dioxide and its effect on our world in another series of experiments.

Our final activity involved the land fill, looking at the mould and bacteria that break down the landfill and the gases they produce. We used fruit and biscuits to make a simulated land fill bowl and then we ate it.

We had a fantastic day and we learned lots of great new things about looking after our environment and about those special people who work hard to help.

A visit from Norman Jorgensen

A visit from Norman Jorgensen

On Tuesday the 22nd of May, award-winning author Norman Jorgensen visited Spearwood Primary School to talk to our students about his books and what it is like to be a children’s author.

Students in Pre-Primary to Year 3 were entertained with Mr Jorgensen reading his books The Last Viking and The Last Viking Returns and lots of stories about the mischief he got up to as a kid. Students in Years 4 to 6 have been reading Jack’s Island so Mr Jorgensen showed them photos of Rottenest Island during World War II and told the classes about the real Jack that inspired the book. He also showed us the gold medal he received when he won Best Picture Book for In Flanders Fields in 2003.

Mr Jorgensen was very entertaining and has inspired many of us to tell stories and work on our creative writing.
